National Craft Day 2016

This year we were able to participate in the annual National Craft Day held by the Malaysian Craft Development Corporation. It is an annual event held right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur for a duration of two weeks. This Craft day is the biggest craft gathering or fair in Malaysia and is always a huge success.

MY Parang first attended last year’s craft fair ( 2015 ) and we made sure we attended this years event too. It is a fantastic opportunity to see all the crafts concentrated in one area . Not to forget, the craftsmen and women get to meet , discuss and exchange ideas. An event not only for buyers, but for the craft community as well. This year there were less exhibitors and we were able to get a spot in the main tent with all the other Parang , keris and other knife makers. Last year a few of us had to be placed in a separate tent due to the lack of space.

Besides sales, there was also live demonstrations of parang making, mat weaving , cooking , brass pots casting , live performances and we even had a visit from the Malaysian Queen as well.

Our simple table for this year’s National Craft Day. We also had a screen showing all the youtube videos and reviews . We had some people stand for hours looking at the videos and many were amazed that our parangs have reached many parts of the world!

Besided selling MY Parang, we also had some exquisitely made skinning knives for sale. These blades can fetch up to rm 600.00 ( about USD 150.00 ) for a 6 incher.

Next to us was Pak Tam from Negeri Sembilan . He kept himself busy carving when the is time ( picture above ) . Below are more pictures of the tents and some of our neighbors during the national craft day. These are not all, but just a few. All in, there were about 30 parang makers who joined the National Craft Day .

And here are some pictures of the demonstration area . Here the blacksmiths make parang live in front of customers. Many people come to bring their blades to have them handled and sheaths made. Some even have a go at hammering the red hot steel.

This year we had a surprise visit from Her Majesty the Queen of Malaysia. We were caught off guard actually as no one expected her to drop by and visit. The best part of it, she purchased a 12″ MY Parang Duku Chandong from us!

We had a great but hectic time at the National Craft Day this year, but it was very well worth it. Hopefully the Craft Development Corporation will continue to support the craft industry by holding more of these kind of events. MY Parang would also like to say thank you to the Craft Development Corporation of Malaysia for this very well organized and established event and hope to participate again in the following years.

MY Parang review and feedback

Since starting making MY Parang in 2014 , we have received some very encouraging reviews and feedback. The ones we are able to gather are either from YouTube or from our re-seller’s websites. MY Parang – On Ray Mears website

MY Parang is now sold on the Ray Mears website !

Anyway, we believe this may be old news to some people, but we are proud to mention that our Parangs are now sold on the Ray Mears website ( www.raymears.com ) . We feel thoroughly honored by this as the Ray Mears website is known to be very picky. They only sell proper and usable equipment , not whatever that sells. They have a senior team of instructors who will test and evaluate the equipment . Once this is done, then only will they decide to sell it or not on the Ray Mears website .

At the moment they are only selling the 10″ MY Parang Duku Chandong but we are happy enough. We would like to thank those who have helped us so much in the process of getting the Parangs evaluated by the Ray Mears team and also for being persistent enough. It wasn’t easy, not did it happen overnight .

Ray Mears is an icon known throughout the world for his love and expertise in field of bushcraft . If you have not heard of Ray Mears, then you better hop on youtube and see who he is.

MY Parang – Parang Bulan

Besides the MY Parang – Parang Tangkin and the MY Parang – Parang Machete we also recently added a third model – the Parang Bulan

MY Parang - Parang Bulan — MY Parang – Parang Bulan

Bulan means Moon in the Malay language and you can see a slight resemblance of a half or crescent moon shape on the Parang Bulan. The wide belly gives this parang a very wide and effective chopping area. Among the other two recently released models, this parang is much heavier. It excels at larger tree limbs or trunks. it might be slightly on the heavy side for general use and leans more towards chopping work. To chop all day long you would need ripped forearms, but if you don’t have them, they perfect for short hard work.

A prominent belly also makes sharpening the blade easy. Easy of sharpening and edge retention is a legendary characteristic of the Bidor made blades. They Parang Bulan are also sold with the nylon sheath.

MY Parang – Parang Machete

Another new model for 2015! This time it’s a very familiar parang shape that most people would recognize. People always refer to the Parang as a “Parang Machete” , so here is our version of the famous Latin American chopper!

One glance and you will know that this model is modeled after the machete. However, machetes are normally made of thin steel and is usually long. For this parang machete, we made the blade 12 inches, and of course with thicker steel and with a distal taper. The result is a very light chopper which is very quick in the hand, but chops very well. If you are looking for something light and a chopper which you can chop all day long, this one is an excellent contender.

The flat edge makes it very easy to sharpen , and sharpening a Bidor made parang is always a pleasure.

I know some of you will be asking for a longer version – 14″ , 16 ” etc. we may look into that, but for the moment, lets enjoy the 12″ version first. Try it and you will definitely be impressed!

All the other goodies like the Nylon sheath, squared spine, stick tang, distal taper, 5160 high carbon steel , zone hardened , wooden handle with pin are on this parang as well. Not to forget, hand – made.
