MY Parang – Lading

The MY Parang Lading

MY Parang Lading

Having its roots for a long time in the Malay culture, the Parang Lading is a quite popular traditional designed parang. It is believed to originate from the state of Kedah, Malaysia.  The Parang Lading is also used as a weapon in the Silat Cekak ( Traditional Malaysian martial arts ) , other than as an agricultural tool . There are some slight differences in the everyday tool and the ones used in Silat cekak.

One of the main difference is that for Silat Cekak, the Parang Lading  needs to be made to match the owners arm. There are specific ways on how to measure this. Why does it need to be so? It is believed that a proper sized tool ( matched with the owner ) will not “bite” the user / owner. This is very important, maybe not so in everyday use, but definitely  during Close Quarter Combat.

Another difference is that the Parang lading used in Silat Cekak is usually only sharp about 1-2 inches from the tip. This is done so the un-sharpened part of the blade is used to stop or deflect the opponents strike. The agricultural version has perhaps 10 inches of sharpened edge  ( on a 12 inch blade ) .

Here is a short video of the Parang lading used in Silat Cekak.

We have been selling the MY Parang Lading for a year locally, and we are very pleased with the response so far .

Another point we would like to put forward is that the MY Parang Lading blade is not made in Bidor. They are made in Pekan Darat ,Penang. One of our first articles was on Pekan Darat, a village with a long history of knife and weapon making. You can read the article here. Why not Bidor? Because we would like to do what we can, to ensure the blacksmithing industry is alive and continued in Pekan Darat.

MY Parang – Golok 120

MY Parang Golok 120

MY Parang Golok 120

Another smaller version of the 125 / 135 , this MY Parang Golok 120 is slightly shorter and lighter than the MY Parang Golok 115 . Weighing only at 320 grams / 11.3 oz, it is so far the lightest in our stable of parangs .

Light does not mean ineffective , in fact , a lighter tool does not tire you as much as a heavy tool . You can chop with it  or carry it in your backpack all day long  and you will not even even feel tired. We would call it a large – robust knife. Not meant for heavy chopping but worth its weight in the jungles.

The slim and long blade also makes it a suitable blade for cleaning game, especially with the belly and pointed tip.  The thinner steel and steeper grind also performs better when cutting and slicing.

It is also adapted to suit those who are in search of a lighter Parang for:

  • Backpacking and hiking
  • General trail maintenance
  • Ladies or those who prefer something smaller and lighter
  • Skinning game

Matched with a slim sheath, the total weight is a miserable 480 grams / 17 oz .

While the Golok 115 may be slightly shorter and heavier, we are very confident that this MY Parang Golok 120 of ours will fare equally well. Always choose the best tool to suit your job.

Specifications for the MY Parang golok 120 are as below:

  • Blade length : 27.5 cm / 11  in

MY Parang – Parang Bulan

                                                      Discontinued  from 2021

Besides the MY Parang – Parang Tangkin and the MY Parang – Parang Machete we also recently added a third model – the Parang Bulan

MY Parang - Parang Bulan
MY Parang – Parang Bulan

Bulan means Moon in the Malay language and you can see a slight resemblance of a half or crescent moon shape on the Parang Bulan. The wide belly gives this parang a very wide and effective chopping area. Among the other two recently released models, this parang is much heavier. It excels at larger tree limbs or trunks. it might be slightly on the heavy side for general use and leans more towards chopping work. To chop all day long you would need ripped forearms, but if you don’t have them, they perfect for short hard work.

A prominent belly also makes sharpening the blade easy. Easy of sharpening and edge retention is a legendary characteristic of the Bidor made blades. They Parang Bulan  are also sold with the nylon sheath.

Here are some stats for those who like numbers:

– Blade length – 30.5 cm / 12 in
– Handle length – 17 cm / 6.7 in
– Overall length – 47.5 cm /  in
– Widest blade – 5.5 cm / 2.0 in

MY Parang – Parang Machete

Discontinued  from 2021
Another new model for 2015! This time it’s a very familiar parang shape that most people would recognize. People always refer to the Parang as a “Parang Machete” , so here is our version of the famous Latin American chopper!

MY Parang - Parang Machete
MY Parang – Parang Machete

One glance and you will know that this model is modeled after the machete. However, machetes are normally made of thin steel and is usually long. For this parang machete, we made the blade 12 inches, and of course with thicker steel and with a distal taper. The result is a very light chopper which is very quick in the hand, but chops very well. If you are looking for something light and a chopper which you can chop all day long, this one is an excellent contender.

The flat edge makes it very easy to sharpen , and sharpening a Bidor made parang is always a pleasure.

I know some of you will be asking for a longer version – 14″ , 16 ” etc. we may look into that, but for the moment, lets enjoy the 12″ version first. Try it and you will definitely be impressed!

Here are some stats for those who like numbers:

– Blade length – 30.5 cm / 12 in
– Handle length – 17 cm / 6.7 in
– Overall length – 47 cm / 18.5 in
– Widest blade – 5.0 cm / 2.0 in
– Weight – 560 grams / 19.8 oz
– Gross weight ( with sheath and box )  – 850 gram / 30.0 oz

MY Parang – Parang Tangkin

Discontinued  from 2021

First thing you will notice is how the blade is angled upwards. Some people may find this quite awkward, but in fact it is very ergonomic . It works especially well when you are positioned low on the ground. Using the parang tangkin in this position enables the blade to hit parallel to the ground  , keeping your knuckles safe. This will enable the user to fully use the entire blade or the sweet spot for chopping. Compared to other parangs, you might hit the tip into the ground when cutting from a low position.

Note how the blade lies flat on the ground and the handle is away from the ground

When cutting from a standing or higher position , with the cut at chest or upper waist level, the parang tangkin delivers a slicing cut which is very effective . Try this and you will notice how effective it is.
